Prior to the widespread use of GPS and navigation apps at our fingertips, Alistair Begg and his wife were driving on the highway when he took note of the sun beginning to set. It was, as he said to his wife, “going down in the wrong direction”. After several moments of confused conversation trying to interpret this strange phenomenon, Alistair realized he had missed a turn (a miraculous admission!) and they were on the highway headed east instead of south, where they needed to be heading.
Who/what was going in the wrong direction? Not the sun. Fortunately, this recognizable and agreed-upon point of reference helped this couple find their bearings and begin to head in the right direction.
In September, we’ll look to renew our bearings in Christ and our sense of connection with our faith community as we add a new in-person worship service on Sundays, and explore new ways of being connected in-person and on-line. And yes, we hope and pray to renew some of our pre-COVID ways of ministry and mission that enable us to be the body of Christ. In worship and in discussion groups, we will explore ways to experience renewal in our souls/spirits, our sense of calling and purpose, our mental and physical health, and in our relationships/sense of community.
Speaking of “finding our bearings” and heading in the right direction: the Wishmyer’s have moved! Our new address is 20448 Oatlands Chase Place, on the south side of town. And, just so we’ll always know that the sun is setting (and rising) in the right direction, the previous owner/builder embedded a large compass rose in the entryway landing.
Psalm 113 declares, “From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised.”
May the sun – and the Son – always give you the bearings you need to find your way!
Grace and peace,
Pastor Jim Wishmyer
