Our Purpose for Giving

Deep in our hearts we all want to make a difference.  One way of bringing purpose to our lives is by helping and supporting activities that encourage and have impact on the lives of others. What we value is reflected through our choices about where we spend our time and resources.

As a community of believers, our giving journey begins with reflecting on our values and then setting priorities for the purpose of allowing God to work through us to make a difference in our community and in the world.

We are grateful that you have chosen to learn about our programs and support the mission and people of Leesburg United Methodist Church. By spreading the good news of God’s grace, and providing encouragement and hope, we are changing lives one person at a time.

Thank you for your gifts and tithes! We are excited to see what God will be able to do through you.

Grace and Peace.

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians, 9:7

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about giving?

The Bible says a lot about giving, but there are three main Biblical themes to ponder as you reflect on your decision to give:

  1. Money is a blessing from God.
  2. God is glorified when those who have been blessed, care for those who are in need.
  3. Money can be used for good, but it is also a potential idol and a force of disruption against a person’s ability to love God and neighbor.

Further, when we consider the sacrifice that Christ made for humankind, how else can we act if our mind is on Jesus.

How much should I give?

Giving is a personal decision.  The Bible teaches giving of “first fruits” side-by-side with tithing (tithing means to give one-tenth or 10% of income). (Numbers 18:13)  Giving of first fruits means responding first to God’s call to give, rather than waiting until after the bills are paid and the amount leftover is known. We focus upon the first fruits teaching at Leesburg UMC because it focuses us on God’s place in our lives and puts God’s place in our life ahead of our material needs.  For those of us who have been blessed with much, it puts God before all our “wants,” things that are not needs at all. It also encourages us to look at what we give to God in relation to time and talent, since these can also be first fruits.

May I choose where my donation goes?

Yes, but we encourage everyone to give their first-fruits/tithes to our general operations via “Ministries and Missions” and/or “Mortgage Fund” options. If you feel called to additional giving above and beyond your regular offering, a special giving page offers choices for gifts to specific missions, ministries, and projects.

What core Ministries and Missions are supported by my gift?

Your donation supports various local missions and the following ministries:

  • Adult
  • Children
  • Congregational Care
  • Youth
  • Finance Lay Leaders and Evangelism
  • Fellowship
  • Technology
  • Music
  • Worship

Every dollar given to Ministries and Missions is spent as follows:

  • $0.53 of every dollar given in support of our Ministries and Missions directly supports the ministries previously listed plus local missions.
  • $0.27 pays for operating and maintaining our three buildings and our office administrative costs that support our ministries.
  • $0.18 pays our Apportionment that supports the Virginia Conference ($0.05), clergy health and retirement benefits ($0.09) and general funds worldwide ($0.03).
  • Finally, $0.03 of each dollar supports Other expenses.

Does online giving devalue the worship aspect of giving?

Giving is not simply about giving money, but about an act of worship and gratitude to our Lord, who has given us all we have as His stewards. We don’t want you to lose this aspect of thanksgiving and worship when you give digitally, so we have placed “Giving Cards” in the back of the pews for your use. We encourage you to place a Giving Card in the offering plate as a token of your online financial gift and as a way to participate in the tangible and sacramental act of placing your offering before God.

Do I pay any additional fees to give online?

There is no cost to the giver, although the church will incur a small transaction fee. Giving transactions made via Online Giving (web or app) will have the option to include an additional Convenience Fee. The Convenience Fee is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, but checking this box will help defray our cost for processing this transaction by adding it to your donation. Your entire donation is tax-deductible.

May I set up recurring donations?

Yes, you can schedule Repeating Gifts on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. This will require creating a E360 Giving login account.

Is my credit card information safe?

Online giving utilizes an SSL encrypted connection that encrypts all financial information sent to our servers and to the payment gateway. This information will remain private and will never be given away to third parties, other than to process your scheduled contributions. Donations made online, by text or on the app are processed by Ekklesia E360 Giving. No credit or bank account information is stored on the Leesburg UMC’s systems.
